Gonna start a little explanation of the three different tanking options we have so that everybody will be more aware of the pros and cons of each. There is no one best tanking option for all aspects of gameplay, and it is important to understand the distinction between the three classes. (Note: I exclude rogue/boomkin/mage/pet tanks here. Sry, trass and porche.)
Warrior: Pros- High Single-target threat; Easily Uncrushable; Much more itemization. Cons - Low group aoe threat; more downtime between shield block casts allowing more crushing blows in. As far as raiding goes post 10-man, warriors are typically the main tank on most bosses end-of-story. Blizzard has a bias towards warriors, but I'll whine about that another day. They are awesome tanks as they are so easy to gear up and get to the crush and crit immune marks, but for 5-mans and 10-man raids druids and pallys usually beat them out because of the efficiency of kills. Warriors will basically require at least 1 -2 cc and a proper kill order being followed by all players for an instance to come off easy. Not saying thats always but generally for heroics warriors without some cc and group communication make piss-poor tanks compared to pallys. They are awesome for bosses though because of thier spell reflection and high threat.
Tankadin: Pros- High group AOE threat; holy shield uncrushability; Ranged Taunt. Cons- Lower single target threat; threat requires mana which is not regenerable in the way that rage is; I also think they have less spell damage reduction than warriors or druids, but I could be wrong on that one. Paladins are my favorite tank for instances hands-down. They can go in and benefit from pulling 5 at a time, because their aoe threat is increased by multiple shield blocks. They have bubbles for dps/healers who pull threat and blessings are a way more optimal buff than the mandatory battle shout were gonna get from warriors. Aside from that as we progress in raids it will become clear that for long boss fights paladins simply dont have the threat gen to last through full-on boss fights that druids or warriors do. Our dps will have to scale back because of it, which will slow down our raiding.
Druid: Pros- Highest Single Target threat; Average group AOE threat; Insane armor/stam to negate crushing blows and incoming damage. Cons- Crushable at all times; take longer to build threat at the beginning of a battle to build threat than a warrior; Self-healing is almost entirely impossible as it requires popping out of bear. Druids are my favorite tank overall obviously, and the reason is because they are a mixed hybrid between warriors and pallys. We have the threat gen of a warrior as well as the rage, and we also have higher aoe threat than a warrior does. We do require a few seconds b4 anybody can start in though as we have to get some stuff in place to start our threat cycle. Druids require more healing overall typically, but can be much more easy to heal because of the consistency of it. We take a hell of alot less spike damage because our armor/stamina gives us a HUGE buffer against crushing blows that pallys/warriors dont have.
All in all each has their place and use. We have a variety of tanks in our guild that will all work well together as we progress. In the meantime though be aware of their weaknesses, and what you can do in your role to overcome them. We're standing pretty good for 25-man content with 3 prot wars, 2 prot pallys, and 1 feral druid by my count. With 6 tanks we have more than enough to form our groups and rotate the one or two excess in and out as needed. Same again for 10mans. We have more than enough for two full groups. Just a matter of getting them going and splitting the people up.
