First off we all know I despise pvp, and I'm big enough to admit that it's MOSTLY because I suck at it. However, the key word there is mostly because as my intention is to experience the most I can for my 15 bucks a month I want to clear as many raids as I can. To throw the scales in my favor though I have to look at what gear provides me with the best stats for raiding progression (all of you should be thinking about it too). Now with that said, I'm going to make the assumption that we've all used thottbot b4 and have a basic knowledge of how to look up gear there. As you peruse thottbot you will see each item has a "item lvl" and some have a "required lvl". The item lvl has to do with the lvl that that gear would be grey or white for you as I understand it. The required lvl is the lvl required to wear said piece of equipment. If it's a quest item, the required lvl and the item lvl are the same. Ok so wtf Mc, we knew that already right, yeah yeah... Well the point is that each item's item lvl and rarity partially determine what amount of stats it will have. Blizzard allocates a certain # of points for rarity and item lvl and these points are then "spent" on the stats provided on that item. So these PVP epics are helpful because they are modest upgrades yes, but they are not to be misconstrued as the necessary or even best gear to begin raiding with much less be pursuing for raiding. They are helpful, but a good portion of their points are spent on "resilience". Resilience is a pvp stat for the most part and while helpful in kara will not be as helpful as some of the epics or even heroic blues might be do to better item point distribution. Resilience takes up item points that could be allocated to more raid-beneficial stats. I'm not saying do not go out and PVP because it's your account and you can do as you like. I am saying though that you should look into expanding a PVP set for PVP and eventually phasing out your PVP items in favor of more raid-specced gear for raiding as we progress.
that's really good info, Mc. I had no idea about how the points worked and didn't know that points going toward resiliency might be at the expense of other stats. interesting...
Yeah, that kind of goes hand in hand with my perspective on spec. If you want to excel at raiding, then you need to spec yourself in that manner and drop the points that are only pvp or solo related... Now I don't PVP so I'm not saying you can't hit top in HK's or Damage or Healing w/o a pvp spec. What I am saying is that a PVP build is more conducive to that end. Also one last quick point... Resilience is the thing that gimps the PVP gear for raiding purposes. Those item points could be spent on stam, str, agi, int, spi, armor or any of the myriad combat rating stats that we need to hit our caps against raid bosses. While the pvp epics are upgrades in some ways obviously, they will eventually limit you in your ability to hit caps and fulfill your roll to the most in raiding. That goes for tanks, dps, and casters because we all have our stats that we should be striving for... Just wanted to make sure my point was clear there. Ok, so maybe it wasn't that quick a point...
